Is it easier to sing or play an instrument?
Kate asked:
Ok, my friend is always talking about how lucky i am to play an instrument because singing is harder. I think playing an instrument is harder, but she cant admit that shes second best at anything. I play flute and its hard to get a good tone, but she says its easy because all you have to do is press keys. What do you guys think? What is easier, flute or singing?
oh, and also, id like smeone to answer that has had experience in both, not someone who is biased one way or the other

Anyone can sing without training, but you need practice to do it well. No one can play the flute without some kind of training, so I think that’s harder.
I found singing to be easier because I guess I naturally had it.
It depends on the individual.
both are hard to be good at.for singing you have to train your voice and yu have to practice for both
Singing is easier because ANYONE can do it. Maybe not well, but ANYONE can sing.
Very few people can play the flute. She is definitely second best here. Unless she starts to play tuba.
if you have nice vocals singing if you practice the instrument but i think singing is easier
play an instument. you don’t have to worry about finding your right vocal range, you don’t have to worry about losing your voice and playing an insturment is just so much easier.
I don’t think you can really compare the two; they have different challenges.
singing is easier. your friend is an idiot!
playing needs a lot of practice, but more fun. singing is easier, but u dont enjoy much
sing, haha, but for someone who cant sing ti would be harder.
both are hard. i play the piano and can say yes an instrument is VERY VERY hard to play specially if you want to learn a hard piece. i think learning to play an instrument is harder becuase singing is like a gift not all people can sing they just have a special talent=) but everyone can play an instrument
so playing an instrument is harder
but singing is something not everyone can do
and its something pointless to fight over.
i think singer is harder because you tune with everybody and go deeper, all you have to do is press keys i play the violin and that is harder than both put together because i have to shift too in the music.
Playing the flute is harder..
My sister plays the flute and i sing. I’ve tried to play her flute before and its REALLY hard! Singing is a LOT easier (for me). I give you credit for playing the flute but I also give your friend credit because singing isn’t easy either. Trust me i would know…I’ve been singing since i was about 4 years old! Remember: Follow Your Dreams!
that depends on the person…
some people possess the talent for playing an instrument, some for singing, some for both…
if you naturally have a singing ability, then that will come easy to you and playing an instrument may seem very hard because you really have to work at it and practice..
if you can easily pick up an istrument and play or learn how to quickly, than that will seem simple to you and singing may not if you have to take vocal lessons and training.
since you play the flute and she doesn’t, she probably has no idea that playing the flute is very challenging and frustrating at times..you have to have the right mouth positions, the right air flow, etc.
it is impossible to answer this question with a direct yes or no because everyone is different and trying to compare playing the flute to singing is difficult in that they are nothing like one another.
I think its easier to play an instrument well than try to sing with a terrible voice. Its’ easier to sing if you have a good voice than it is to play an instrument well because of the built in advantage. But I am assuming that you find it necessary to have an audience-beyond that I find it nearly effortless to wail away in the shower rather than to spend an eternity perfecting my instrumental skills. In short,do what you like, feel comfortable with and if that is easier then so be it.
I completely disagree. I think first off any musical endeavor is largely based on natural talent. Singing or playing an instrument obviously comes easier for those blessed with a natural sense of pitch and other gifts. You must practice regularly regardless of skill level or what you are doing whether its learning piano or learning to sing. As for her argument you are just “pressing keys” that really isn’t true. It takes both practice and coordination and many instruments require building up callouses which involves pain. You do need to do vocal exercises to strengthen your voice and diaphragm but having taken years of choir and guitar and bass one thing I can say is there is never any physical pain in learning to sing where as playing an instrument does involve some physical pain. I would be sure to throw that point back at her. One final point on her argument of just pressing keys… with the popularity of games like guitar hero, many people are under the mistaken impression that you can translate mastery of playing a real guitar because you are good at Guitar Hero. The 2 things are in no way related cuz that is all you are doing in Guitar Hero… just pressing buttons. There is a bit more to a real musical instrument.
Anyone can sing, but there are very few that can sing well.
Neither singing nor playing an instrument is easier. I play the cello and sing and they both are about equally difficult. Maybe it was hard for her to be able to sing so she thinks it is harder than playing an instrument. Different people learn things differently so no one can really say what is easier for someone else.
Singing is obviously WAY easier. Anyone can sing–you can just do it! Playing an instrument requires using equipment (the instrument), and that requires a lot of skill. Ask anyone, whether they are musical or not, to sing. They will! Then hand them your flute and see what they can do. Try letting your friend try your flute sometime! It’s not just a matter of pressing down keys.
this is a hard question to answer because
if you have the natural talent of a singing voice then singing is way easier you may not need traning
a instrument is harder to master because its impossible to master a musical instrument people spend a hole life time trying to know everything but its impossible
also singers get more credit too
doesnt seem fair does it
Well it definetly depends on the individual. Practice is required for both instruments. If you have a naturally good voice it is much easier than playing an instrument. Playing an instrument requires more control and development than the voice (usually)
